Named after the character in A Midsummer Night's Dream…
PUCK was designed as part of an assignment known as the ADJECTIVE/NOUN Project.
The process begins with exploring an ADJECTIVE of our choosing using only abstract forms to represent the adjective. From there, everyone is then given the same NOUN and must apply their individual adjectives to this noun.
Adjective:
playful
The first step in the process was to select an adjective and explore how we might represent this adjective through abstract form alone.
Some of the core tenets of playful design…
Involve rounded edges and exaggerated proportions so I kept that in mind while exploring PLAYFUL as an abstract theme.
Noun:
Chair
With our adjective selected and explored, we then were all given the noun CHAIR and asked to infuse this noun with the principle traits of our adjective.
My initial exploration was fairly broad...
In the end, I worked with something more closely resembling my abstract adjective exploration and then grounded it further by making the noun CHAIR more evident in the design.
Ideating:
Legs
Now having a sense of my design direction, I took a closer look at both the form of the legs and how they would interact with one another.
inspiring:
color
Inspiration for color can come from anywhere and with PUCK it was found in these 80’s inspired igloo brand coolers. Bright. Bold. Playful.
protoyping:
form
At this stage I had a good sense of the form but prototyping provided a way to explore little nuances and subtleties you miss in drawings alone. The most important was understanding the Chair legs would need to bow outward.
Sculpting:
texture
I knew I wanted to use a leather like texture on the back of the seat but it took a lot of exploration to determine what I wanted from the legs. In the end, I chose a pillowy texture which has this satisfying juxtaposition with the hard resin legs.
Assembling:
Components
After 3D printing the parts, it was just a mater of applying some paint, stitching the seams, gluing down the fabric, and snapping the two pieces in place with pressure fit as I had intended.
